ATM/Debit Card Fraud More Than Doubled Over 2 Years
Automated teller machine (ATM) card/debit card fraud has more than doubled over the last two years both in terms of value and volume, according to this reply to the Rajya Sabha (upper house of Parliament) on August 8, 2017. Credit card fraud has declined over the period.
Reported ATM/debit card fraud increased 179% in value from Rs 13.86 crore in 2014-15 to Rs 38.67 crore in 2016-17, based on data from the Reserve Bank of India.
In terms of volume, ATM/debit card fraud increased 169% from 2,498 in 2014-15 to 6,709 in 2016-17.

Reported credit card fraud declined 34% in volume from 10,382 in 2014-15 to 6,811 in 2016-17, and 24% by value from Rs 42.32 crore to Rs 32.03 crore over the period.

As many as 15,792 incidents of ATM/debit card fraud were reported over the last three years, amounting to Rs 83.80 crore. Credit card fraud was higher in volume and value; 27,042 incidents of credit card fraud amounting to Rs 120.32 crore were reported over the last three years.
Digital payments increased in value by 11% immediately after demonetisation--from Rs 94 lakh crore in November 2016 to Rs 104 lakh crore in December 2016, but have fluctuated month to month over the year, IndiaSpend reported on November 8, 2017.
Post-demonetisation, about 57% credit card holders said they were using cards more often than they did a year ago, according to a survey by TransUnion Cibil, a credit information firm, The Indian Express reported on November 1, 2017.
As many as 464 incidents of credit card fraud were reported in Mumbai--India's financial capital--between January and September 2017, an increase of 45% compared to the same period last year, according to Mumbai police data.
